When this classic Atherton Tudor suffered damage from heavy rainfalls, the homeowners tapped interior designer Christine Lin, founder of Form + Field to refresh and reimagine their family home.
Lin was tasked with creating a comfortable and welcoming interior that would artfully blend modern designs with some of the more traditional elements that were dear to the owners' hearts.
Inspired by a distinctly California aesthetic, Lin wanted to create a light and airy feel throughout the home. A new all-white backdrop laid the foundation for a palette of neutrals accented by pops of color in a diverse yet complementary palette. The colors are playful, yet quiet: hues of rose, dusty blue, ochre and olive in the entry parlor, maroon and mustard in the living room, and a joyful chartreuse in the family room. "We love using a mix of materials in our projects," says Lin. "It contributes to the balance and character of a space."
Although she kept home’s historic architectural details intact, she carefully edited the interiors to create a sophisticated blend of contemporary and classic elements that reflects the homeowner's eclectic tastes. "The biggest challenge was reconciling the different styles and family members and making sure the end result would still be cohesive."
Because their extended family routinely gathers here, the interiors needed to both child friendly and reconfigured in a way that would reflect how the home would actually be used. The formal living room became a media room where both children and adults can come together. The home theater is now a much-needed guest room, and the sunroom is now a playroom for the grandchildren.
The result is a sophisticated yet comfortable home that maintains its timeless appeal – one that honors both new and cherished pieces and brings the homeowners a renewed sense joy in their beloved family home.
